Blogwork (Ying Chen Fei)

1. For the past 3 weeks, I have learnt to be more observant and that I should not judge people or things based on appearances. I should look beyond what is on the surface. The lesson which left the most impression on me is lesson 2: A picture paints a thousand words. When the teacher first flashed the 2 pictures, I wanted to donate to the woman with the child and not Gilbert. However, after knowing both of their stories, I decided to change my mind. Gilbert just needs a little help to get back on his feet again so the money might make a big difference to him. Whereas for the woman, donating to her would just be supporting the illegal organization she is in. I had picked up an important life lesson in this lesson.

2. Colour-red
During Chinese New Year, my house will be decorated with lots of red ornaments and red is a prosperous colour.
   Symbol-(:
Chinese New Year is a happy occasion and i get to see my relatives, which makes me happy.

There are lion dance performances everywhere during Chinese New Year and it is very noisy and exciting.

Blog work (class work )

Over the last few weeks of CID lessons, I have learnt many morals of life, but what moved me the most was the picture of an African girl preyed by a vulture. Kevin Carter was reported taking the picture, because it was his "job title", and left afterwards. He was told not to touch the children due to transmitting disease. He committed suicide 3 months after winning the Pulitzer Prize, and the reason was believed to be because of the many angry comments directed at him for not helping the young girl. I believe that these netizens have been too overboard, instead of praying and giving sympathy for the girl, they criticized him, causing him to be so guilty that he committed suicide. What right do they have to reprimand him so much?? I believe that even if they were in his shoes at that time, they will also not help the girl, thinking that it was not worth to risk their life as they might even get diseases from the little girl. Everyone can make mistakes and they will eventually be forgiven, so why can't they forgive him? Thus I finally understand from this lesson how critical and hurting your comments online as a netizen can be. I will end off with a quote I found online of his last words:

"I am depressed ... without phone ... money for rent ... money for child support ... money for debts ... money!!! ... I am haunted by the vivid memories of killings and corpses and anger and pain ... of starving or wounded children, of trigger-happy madmen, often police, of killer executioners ... I have gone to join Ken if I am that lucky.

Russell's holiday reflection

The December holidays were quite productive for me (I guess.). Well for starters- homework. Well that was quite a lot of homework but I managed to finish it in time before school started. I went to Hong Kong in November, where I visited many places and shopped a lot. It was really nice there, and kinda cold too. In he middle of the trip, my family and I went to 深圳。 What was weird was that a young boy, of age 3 (probably), was smoking a cigarette. His father (I assumed that he was) was just standing there, not paying any attention to the boy. I think that this is very unhealthy for the boy and his health will be affected, especially since he is young, and his immune system is not as strong as an adult's. I was quite shocked when I saw the scene.
Since it was the holidays, I didn't really have the mood to do homework and was not as productive as I had thought I would be. However, upon reflection, I realized that I should have done my homework first before doing other things. Anyways, overall, my holiday was quite fun.

Holidays reflection by Ong Sze Yi

During the holidays, I went to a small island in Malaysia. At my stay there, I realized it kept raining throughout the day. Even when I woke up in the middle of the night, I could still hear the rain outside my window. But we weren't that worried as it was only drizzling. On the next day, when we were having our breakfast, a local resident went up to our table and told us if we have to go back to the 'mainland' we should do it now because it was already starting to flood as we were staying at a small ' kampong ' which was ' linked ' to Malaysia by a measly bridge. The next day, the bridge kind of collapsed a little, my family and I were very worried as we were stuck in that island until the bridge was fixed. But after a few days, we managed to return to Singapore.

Holiday Reflection (Ying Chen Fei)

Last December holidays, I went to HaiNan China with my family. As my grandparents live there, we went there often to for vacations and to visit them. Hainan's climate is tropical, characterised by hot and humid summers, usually with mild, pleasant winters of 19-25°C. However, particularly last year, there was snowing in the neighborhood province KunMing  hence the temperature in HaiNan also fell. When we reached, the temperature was as usual but after a few days, the temperature began to drop to 7-11°C. We were totally unprepared. We did not even bring enough winter clothes and borrowed clothes from my grandparents. For the rest of the trip, I just stayed at home, doing homework in the morning and playing table tennis in the afternoon. There was also a swimming pool that we could swim in but the weather was too cold. There was also a beach a stone's throw away. It takes 5-10 minutes to walk there and we go there almost everyday. HaiNan's specialty is coconuts. Therefore, there were coconut trees everywhere and a lot of people selling them. Coconuts were sold cheaply at 5 yuan for one. After you have ordered, they will cut a hole for you to drink the juice inside. It was thirst quenching and refreshing. I had fun with my family and thoroughly enjoyed the trip.

Holiday reflection (Sun Yuyang)

I spent my holidays watching anime ,surfing the internet and doing homework ^_^.I also went for enriching VIA and did a lot of meaningful stuff.

When I first heard that we are going to an old folks home to do VIA,I felt rather disappointed since I wanted to go to an orphanage or child care centre.Honestly speaking, our first day(they celebrated Deepavail) there was rather awkward. They treated us as guests so we couldn't do much.I didn't know how to communicate with the elders since most of them speak hokkien while I don't. I felt really out of place. However, our second session was really fun and interesting.I was relieved when they gave us work to do unlike the previous session. We helped them to keep all the Deepavail decorations and get ready for Christmas. Grace and I were given wreaths to play with. At first, we were kind of puzzled when they told us to remove all the decorations on the wreaths since most of them were meant to come with the wreaths. After we removed them, a lady came told us to put all the decorations back on according to different color scheme. It was really interesting and fun since I don't celebrate Christmas at home, that was the first time that I ever got to play around with all those lovely decorations.

I had been to the kitchen for a few times.By the end of our last session I could tell where all the the utensils were placed. Washing dishes was a actually quite a new experience to me especially when the number of dishes, bowls and cups each could go as high as 60+,furthermore they all came in at one go.It was tiring. Also,I had to serve the elders food too. I spilled some of the soup accidentally.I felt really guilty even though the lady there told me repeatedly that it's ok. I guess I'm really too reckless and excited.

I didn't manage to take a photo of the finals products. We traced the decorations out on cardboard and cut them out before wrapping them with wrappers. We made around 36 balls and 54 leaves.
Cutting cardboard was really tiring. It reminded me about the pebbles that we made for Teachers day.

We first painted the birds blue before sprinkling glitter and decorations on.I can still remember how my blue skirt almost turned into a Christmas dress due to glitter that I had to sprinkle on the paper birds. We spent almost a full day session just sitting there and decorating birds. It was unforgettable.

I think I learnt a lot through this Via session and gained a lot of new experiences.haha,I guess i have grown to be more artistic and patient due to these Via sessions.
